We are the Austin Capital City Lions Club, a community focused organization, concentrating mostly on the East Austin area. We are one chapter of a larger organization that has more than 1.4 million members in more than 200 countries. Our motto: We Serve!
We also have the distinction of being the oldest predominantly African American Lions Club in the country, having been founded on Aug. 12, 1967. The Honorable Virgil C. Lott served as our first President.
We engage in several service projects a year and provide scholarships annually to students in the Austin area.

Service Projects
In August 2021, our club provided breakfast to teachers at Kealing Middle School to welcome them back to the classroom. Since then, we have worked with them on several of their “Service Days” and will continue to provide them with support. The Austin Capital City Lions is also proud to support the Family Eldercare Fan Drive, in which we raise money to purchase fans for senior citizens without air conditioning, as well as the Central Texas Food Bank. In the Fall of 2022, we participated in the International Peace Poster Contest, with students participating from Kealing Middle School. We have also partner with Huston-Tillotson University on several projects throughout the year.
Justine Lewis & Mirian Jones-Clark Scholarship Fund
In February 2020, we decided to name our scholarship fund after two hard-working and dedicated members, Lion Justine Lewis and Lion Mirian Jones-Clark. In April 2022, we provided two high school students each with a $1,000 scholarship for college and during our 55th Anniversary in August, we provided two students at Huston-Tillotson University each with a $500 scholarship. For the Spring 2023 semester, our club officially approved providing three Huston-Tillotson students a $1,000 scholarship each.

Lion Justine Lewis was a loyal club member for 30 years until her passing in 2018. She sponsored her daughter, Lion Mirian Jones-Clark, into the club in 1993. She graduated from Huston Tillotson College in 1948 with a degree in Home Economics and later graduated with a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Texas. She was a teacher for 59 years and was heavily involved in her church, Ebenezer 3rd Baptist Church, the Capital City Food Bank, and many other civic organizations.
